With the 3rd overall pick, a late 1st rounder acquired earlier in the day and an early 2nd and 3rd rounder - the Boston Bruins were poised to bring some quality young players into the system.
With the third overall selection, Bruins General Manager Drew Passant was thrilled to select a promising power forward in left winger, James Van Riemsdyk.
Passant- "He was actually the number one guy on our list, so it was quite exciting to see him remain on the board after the first two selections."
After trading for Alexander Semin who projects to be the teams first line left winger for years to come, Van Riemsdyk seems like a healthy candidate for the second line. Quite the one two punch, as if Bergeron and kessel wasn't enough. He (Van Riemsdyk) will, however, need some time to develop.
With the 29th selection in the draft, the Bruins took another left winger in Brett Maclean. Maclean played on the top line for the OHL's Oshawa Generals last season on a line with consensus number one pick in 2009 John Tavares. Many feel that Maclean ranking 9th in OHL scoring this past season with 100 points had an awful lot to do with JT, but Boston points out his great play at the CHL Top Prospects game and see playing with Tavares a good thing for their prospect.
Passant- "Our scouts were sold on him because of his hockey sense and great hands. Playing with John Tavares, he's sure to learn a thing or two about offensive creativity. And from what I've seen, he's already blessed with a great skill set."
With their 2nd round selection, Boston took Peterborough Petes goaltender Trevor Cann.
"Trevor is a very good goaltender, so good in fact that the Petes traded Steve Downie and Daniel Ryder late last season to get a young core of players to skate in front of him over the next couple of years. A lot of scouts felt he wasn't big enough, but at 5'11" he measures up to Dominik Hasek... he plays his angles well and doesn't allow too many rebounds. He should also benefit from international play, as he looks to be an invite for the Canadian World Junior team the next couple of years."
With Tuuka Rask already in the system, it was somewhat of a surprise to see the Bruins take a goaltender so early, but they were clearly sold on him.
In the third round, the Bruins took another player from the Oshawa Generals... this time it was right winger Dale Mitchell.
"This guy really impressed me at the games that I went to see. The only knock on him would be his height at only 5'8" - but he already weighs 207 lbs. He is a very good and fast skater and one of the best forecheckers that I've seen in a long time. He's the type of player that you notice on every shift, he skates hard, he isn't afraid of the rough stuff and he has a great shot. He reminds me a bit of Darcy Tucker, except that he is faster and skates much better. He gives 100% on every shift. We'll be happy to keep him united with current teammate Brett Maclean."
Only time will tell how these players will do as they make their way to the pro's in another year or two, but the forwards are all considered "safe" picks to make the NHL and goalie Trevor Cann will get every opportunity to prove himself.
