With the 15th selection in the 2007 draft the Florida Panthers selected defenseman Keaton Ellerby he currently plays for the Kamloops Blazers of the WHL. The 6'4, 190-pound defenseman oozes talent. Ellerby is a tough physical player who can be a willing and vicious pugilist. He scored two goals and 23 assists in 69 games while collecting 120 penalty minutes. “He reminds me a lot of Jay Bouwmeester he has a lot of the same traits as Jay, great skater, hard shot and a little mean streak,” said Florida GM Jeff Shafer.
With the 18th selection the Panthers took center Brandon Sutter he currently plays for the Red Deer Rebels and is the type of player is will be a captain one day in the NFHL. He is a versatile forward; he displays typical Sutter attributes including tenacious puck pursuit and a consistent work ethic.
With the 23rd pick the Panthers took a little bit of a reach in Oscar Moller he currently plays for the Chilliwack Bruins of the WHL. He projects as a gritty two-way forward that usually fits well as a compliment on the second line or as a high-energy leader on the third line. “I could see Oscar excel in the next couple seasons and become one of the leagues best agitators combined with the goal scoring,” said GM Shafer.
The Panthers took Michal Repik with their 44 pick in the second round. Repik is a shifty skater with good acceleration; he seldom loses speed through lateral movement. He shows good anticipation and puck skills. “He had one of the best playoffs this past season that anyone in the WHL has ever had,” said GM Shafer.
The Panthers traded the #45 selection to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for highly totted prospect Ilya Zubov. “I was just ecstatic we could acquire Zubov, he reminds me a lot of Pavel Datsyuk and could turn out to be our steal of the draft. Offensively a very gifted forward, the best 87 born forward Russia has to offer.
