The Detroit Red Wings attacked the innaugural NFHL draft day hard with GM Stefenelli at the helm. There was a buzz that a deal was in the works early but it took till the 19th round for a trade to be officially announced.
Wings management has made no secret their interest in building up the organization's prospect strength by way of their recent deals so it wasn't that unexpected when they dealt Tomas Holmstrom and an 08 3rd rounder to the Ducks for prospect goaltender J-P Levasseu, the Montreal 1st rounder (22nd overall) 07, and the Anaheim 2nd rounder 07. With this deal the Wings bring in a solid goaltender prospect for the eventual retirement of Hasek and two quality picks to help further bolster the youth system. The 22nd pick would later turn into Nick Petrecki, a steal so late in the draft.
"Nick is a real quality pick and I am very excited to get him so late in the draft. I thought for sure he would get snagged earlier. Sure he is a work in progress, but he is already showing the signs of a great future NFHL defenseman. He's big, strong, aggressive, and very sound defensively. He's the prototypical defender and is clearly the future of the game. One day in the future Petrecki will be defending our net." GM Stefenelli
With the 10th overall pick, Detroit's natural pick, the Wings selected Jakub Voracek, one of the brightest wingers in all the draft.
"I'm very happy to be a part of the Red Wings. They are a proud hockey club with a great system and awesome offensive talent. This is a great place for me to learn the game the NFHL way and I can't wait to get out there and prove myself. This is a dream come true." Jakub Voracek
Voracek joins Igor Grigorenko and sharpens the Wings prospect tree at RW handedly. These two kids are projected to make big waves in the NFHL soon and should become franchise faces for the future.
"Jakub is the type of forward that I really respect. He's got great hands and amazing vision. Anyone who can create offense and make pin-point passes is a necessity for puck control teams. He'll fit in really well with our system and I think won't be long from making the big team. This is a great day for our organization." GM Stefenelli
The Wings still have a 2nd round pick to look forward to and according to management they know exactly who they want.
"I only hope he's still available by the time we pick."
