The Detroit Red Wings and GM Mark Stefenelli have been in the hunt for a big time defender since his hiring earlier this month. Aside from a few minor deals the organization has yet to change the image of the pro team...at least that was till now. A few hours ago we here at the Detroit Free Press learned that a deal had been struck and it was only a matter of time before the official announcement. It's official folks, Adam Foote is a Red Wing.
The 6'2" 220lb defender has 14 years pro hockey experience and a bone-crushing personna on the ice. He's expected to bring a great deal of leadership, experience, and strength to the needy Detroit lineup, and by all rights Wings management is very pleased with his addition to the club.
"I was seeking to bring in an established body for our blueline and I couldn't be happier with the results. I am a firm believer that defensive tandoms should consist of a puck mover and a strong, steady stay-at-homer. By bringing Foote to the team we have a top 4 that should rival any pairings in the entirety of the NFHL. Adam Foote, Niklas Lidstrom, Chris Chelios, and Brian Rafalski are a squad that should give the opposition fits. Now Adam is a UFA to be, but at the price of a 2nd round draft pick we couldn't miss here. For now we are a much improved hockey club." GM Stefenelli
Foote comes over from the rival Blue Jackets in a rare interdivisional deal. We asked how he feels about the deal.
"The league just opened so there really hasn't been enough time to build tough rivalries. I'm sure if this were deep into the season it would be an interesting move to come to the enemy, but it's not and I am happy to be a Red Wing. The fact of the matter is I really want to win a Cup now, and the Wings are my best opportunity to do so. This coming season I will do everything in my power to see this team succeed." Adam Foote
Adam is projected to play alongside Brian Rafalski, in what the coaching staff believes will be a very compatible pairing. We'll see how things turn out.
"Brian and Adam have two very differing styles when it comes to playing the game, but I believe that they will compliment eachother very well. Where Brian is a very strong puck mover and has great speed, Adam is hard-hitting and defensively suffocating. Together they should be a formidable matchup against anything the opposition put in front of us. I am really looking forward to training camp." Mike Babcock
