The Detroit Red Wings have stepped into the new era of NFHL hockey with small leaps and bounds towards a successful future. GM Mark Stefenelli was hired to take the reigns of this squad and the organization as a whole has been very confident in what he is expected to bring to self-proclaimed Hockey Town. Stefenelli, who has a reputation for relying on chemistry to win championships, has stepped into his new role as poised as ever, and made a few minor deals that he believes will have a big impact in the future.
"I've come into this organization with a plan to succeed not only in the present, but in the future as well. I intend to see this club evolve into the future of hockey, and though I expect we will challenge for the Cup this season, I am a firm believer that we will only improve over the course of the next few seasons. The first couple transactions I have been involved in you will see are for the betterment of our future as a team, and though we have given many picks away, we have really improved our prospect system." GM Stefenelli
The transactions Mr. Stefenelli refers to are two deals made early last week with the Senators and Islanders respectively.
To Ottawa: D Kyle Quincey, D Jonathan Ericsson
To Detroit: D Kirill Lyamin, OTT 2 07
This deal sees a projected top 3 defender in Lyamin come to the Wings prospect system, at the expense of projected 5th or 6th blueliners. Where Detroit loses some organizational depth, they improve the quality of their present depth. Quality over Quantity...
To Detroit:
D Wes O'Neill
C Frans Nielsen
To New York Islanders:
all detroits picks from 2nd to end of the draft this season
Here we see the Wings toss out the bulk of the coming draft for two up and coming potential stars. O'Neill is a big body who has found a way to mature into his size. He's got two-way skills that are improving steadily and after another season with the Fighting Irish he should earn a spot with the pro team. Nielsen is young and energetic, with soft hands, great vision, and a hard shot. He doesn't shy away from the defensive game and should grow into a very formidable center for the Wings in the future. The only issue standing in his way is his small stature, though we have seen in players like Brian Gionta that size doesn't always dictate your overall value.
We have seen the Wings future improve steadily, though there has been no change to the pro team as of yet. More news to come as it is available.
