We would have to like test them on their ability to make the right/ best decision for their clients.....like give him/her a test with situations they could encounter before appointing them the agent...or something like that

For guys like Selanne and Forsberg or any free agents for that matter I would definitely call it buyer beware. You know the risks if you plan to sign a guy like that.

i wouldnt mind acting as an agent to one, two or three free agents. it would obviously need to be players i have no interest in signing.

here is the thing we cant have it both ways the only options are either.
1 -> start with rosters as of "X" date everyone unsigned at that point remains unsigned unless we sign them ourselves in this league and the NHL rosters would have no further bearing on it adding and removing players as an NHL team does makes us pointless as GMs of these teams.
2 -> only other option at this time is to wait until "X" date when most of the guys have igned and go with the rosters as is at that point
those aret he only options I see going and adding or removing players from teams because an NHL team did so after we started like I said makes us useless as GMs of these teams and no point in us being there

good arguement, these are all great points being made.
i still think we should allow teams to recieve players that were signed - we should pick a cutoff date IMO.
some teams are not filled out yet in the NHL. But I can understand both sides of the issue.
I'll be happy either way

Just to weigh in again, but I think we're beyond waiting for rosters to be set.
With trades already being consummated and teams being reshaped, there has already been a leap of faith by the league that we're working with the rosters as they have been set.
As for the UFAs, I think a method we could use that would work is such:
If a UFA (other than Selanne or Forsberg) signs, then they are awarded to that team. This way clubs like Edmonton, Columbus, Nashville, etc. that look like they'll add a player or three aren't disadvantaged by smaller rosters. Other than the big two, none of the free agents will be paid a ton of cash, so even if it creates a slight cap problem, they can always move a player out for a pick/prospect to get under the cap.
On the topic of Selanne and Forsberg, I would suggest that they are initially awarded in the NFHL to whichever NHL team signs them, however if that team is unable to fit them in (or doesn't want them in the first place) the league can give them a compensatory pick in the middle of the 2nd round of the 2008 draft (~45th overall) and the players can be made available for all teams to bid on.
It's imperfect, but I think it is most in keeping with the spirit of the league (starting with 2007-08 rosters) and identifies the two most contentious salaries/players and gives their teams rights of first refusal.
Thoughts?

thats the best option and the remaining players unsigned remains unsigned and we start a bidding war for the players. Offer up our own contracts and the player goes to the highest bidder aslong as that bid will keep them under the salary cap

Boys, Boys, Boys! I am just as anxious to get going as everyone else....but it does take a shit load of work to get the rosters and such all up-to-date. The more trades that are made right now, the more work that is being created fo the commish. Bottom line is that it means more work for the commish (who is already swamped!!!)
While I feel the pain of being excited and wanting to get this league started ASAP, the league is not going anywhere and it is VERY IMPORTANT to start the league off on the right foot. In my opinion, trading should have never have started and should not start until the commish feels that the league is ready to go. Its him putting in all the work so let's not make things any tougher than they need to be.
As for the current NHL free agents, I think that the commish should come up with some sort of cut-off date (maybe the same date as the offical league startup) and any free agent that is left available after that should be put up for sale in the open market.

PS, in defence to the commish, anyone who doesent like the idea of waiting until the current NHL free agents sign with their respective teams...simply doesent understand or respect what the commish is trying to do. As the league tries to get off the ground and jump into its frst season, the commish is simply trying to make things as accurate as possible. Again, there is no rush here guys....IF THE LEAGUE IS RUN RIGHT, IT WILL BE AROUND FOR YEARS...SO WHY RUSH!
PS...I have Sidney Crosby and the Mighty Pittsburgh Penguins...don't think that I am not antsy to get this going. But any vetran SIM GM will agree with me, the good leagues are worth the wait!
cheers, GM Blasty, Penguins

Well put Blasty.
When Drew decides what he wants to do, then we'll do it. Until then, we'll natter away about deals and rosters like the excited hockey fans we are :-D

As a former commissioner myself, I think it's a ton of work to assign players as Drew is doing. Then he'll hear 50 complaints about the most obscure players in the league signing elsewhere. Then he'll have dozens of trades to input and lines to auto because rosters are empty. This is not to mention giving all the prospects status and running the entry draft. Then you have to deal with all the UFA and RFA status.
Give him a week or two before you turn up the heat.
With that being said, I think that we shouldn't be dependant on the NHL GM's to set our rosters. Set a date for when to go with the rosters. From then, open it up and give the NFHL GM's full control. No more UFA involvement in the NHL impacts the NFHL, no more trades, retirements, etc.

Well said Blasty, I don't see what the rush is either. Better to wait a little and get everything right.

Okay so I'm still thinking here... today Yashin signed with a Russian team... you see the trouble with signing current UFA's, they might not end up playing in the NHL and therefore they won't play in the NFHL.
Then again, with the draft scheduled for next week (probably Thursday Night) and potentially a couple of months before the remaining free agents sign, thats a long time to wait and I know that nobody wants to wait that long to get season 1 rolling. Even a couple of weeks seems like a long time.
So I'm going to go through the list of UFA's and allow teams to bid on them, however for guys like Forsberg, Selanne, Andy Sutton, probably a few more... (top 6 forwards, top 4 d-men) I'm leaning towards waiting a little longer to see where (or if) they sign sometime soon.
RFA's we have a couple of options, option A - they automatically sign for the team they played on last year. option B - they become UFA's and are open for bidding. option C - they are open for bidding but their former team can match the highest bidder.
Thoughts?
